Ideas That Can Change Your Life TM
J. Skinner, R. Krueger, M.V. Hansen
Most people are trying to juggle too many things. They are inundated by one task after another, all seemingly important and in need of attention.
Dropping the ball means letting go. It means focusing in on the one or two truly important things in your life and dropping everything else. It means grabbing on two one or two really important balls and running with them, instead of remaining stuck in one place with all your balls up in the air.
Lesson 1: Courage
Dropping the ball requires courage. It requires the courage to say “no”. Learn to say “no” with grace !
Lesson 2: Reality check
Do a reality check. If this is left undone, what will really happen ? Is there really any significant downside for just dropping it and ignoring it altogether ?
Try dropping a few of these balls and see what the result is after 90 days.
Lesson 3 : Hand off the ball to someone else.
Virtually all succesful people have developed support teams that pick up the details for them so they can focus on truly important things. Insist on completed staff work !
Lesson 4: Eliminate urgency
Working on the important prevents the urgent !
Lesson 5: Treat your own time as precious
Other’s perceptions of us are the result of our perception of us !
If you do not see your time as being supremely important, neither will the people around you. If this happens, your life will be filled with small things. Other people will drop their balls on you. They will ask you to do trivial things and invite you to trivial events.
However, if you see your time as being extremely valuable, others will too. They will respect your time.
The only way to get time for the important is to ignore and neglect the unimportant. May you reach your goal in style.

Better understated than overstated. Let people be surprised that it was more than you promised and easier than you said.
For effective communication, use brevity. Jesus said, “Follow me.” Now that’s brief! He could be brief because of all that he was that he didn’t have to say.
You cannot speak that which you do not know. You cannot share that which you do not feel. You cannot translate that which you do not have. And you cannot give that which you do not possess. To give it and to share it, and for it to be effective, you first need to have it. Good communication starts with good preparation.
The goal of effective communication should be for listeners to say, “Me, too!” verses “So what?”
Learn to express, not impress.
Be brief on the logic and reason portion of your presentation. There are probably about a thousand facts about an automobile, but you don’t need them all to make a decision. About a half dozen will do.
Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know.
What is powerful is when what you say is just the tip of the iceberg of what you know.
It’s not the matter you cover so much as it is the manner in which you cover it.

How to get support for your ideas more easily than ever before.
First, think your ideas through on paper before you present them to others. Expect natural resistance. When you do present your ideas, do it in a low keyed, almost indifferent manner so that it stirs up no resistance.
Second, expect your ideas to be rejected initially. When this happens, simply ask open ended questions to get feedback and then present your ideas again at a later time in a different form. It is amazing how effective this strategy will be.
Some ideas for the weekend:
- Taking a bath with aromatic oils
- Going to bed early
I decided to loose weight and do exercises twice a week. The aerobics course started with the song ” Maniac” from Michael Sembello (movie Flashdance 1983) .
How powerful this was: While running on ”she is a maniac”, I saw myself dancing 20 years ago on the music of the movie Flashdance AND 20 kg less in weight…
This will be my exercise at home – running daily !
If you make the conscious decision to live a quality life that promotes happiness for those around you, then the positive power of influence will eventually expand to impact all of those people and things that are around you.
